Serious Illness Action Network

Virtual Session: Addressing Urgent Needs During the Pandemic

Stratis Health and Minnesota Network of Hospice and Palliative Care, with the support of many stakeholders, are launching a serious illness action network in Minnesota to help address the urgent needs in serious illness care related to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). We are starting this work with a virtual forum on August 17.

1. Offer a forum for serious illness providers and caregivers on the front lines to share new and emerging practices, tools, and resources relevant in the COVID-19 pandemic

2. Identify strategies or policies that can capitalize on the lessons learned during the pandemic to improve serious illness care more broadly going forward.

A summary brief will be developed from the discussion, which will be distributed and can and used widely by stakeholders.

Anyone who cares for those with serious or advanced illness or anyone who works for or leads and organization that provides this type of care. This includes patients and families, clinicians, health care organization leaders and staff, and allied organizations concerned with serious illness care in Minnesota.

Speakers and topics will include:

  • Dr. Vic Sandler, MHealth Fairview and Dr. Terrence Maag, HealthPartners - Using advance care planning and POLST on the front lines of care during COVID-19

  • Dr. Julie Benson, Lakewood Health System - Using telehealth to offer palliative care services during COVID-19

  • Dr. Joe Bianco and Jessica Martensen, Essentia Health - Hospital-at-home approach to caring for those with serious illness during COVID-19

  • Rhonda Lewis, Southview Acres - Meeting the needs of those with serious illness in long-term care during COVID-19

Facilitated discussion will follow rapid-fire presentations to help identify opportunities and needs to strengthen capacity to provide high-quality serious illness care.

This virtual session will take place on August 17th from 9:00 AM- 11:00 AM. It is free, but registration is required. Click here to register. You will receive a confirmation email from Jodi Winters ([email protected]) with additional information.
