Dick Guiton

Committee, It is my honor to nominate Dick Guiton for the Hospice Volunteer of the Year Award. Dick exemplifies the very essence of hospice care through his compassion, thoughtfulness, and unwavering dedication to patients, families, and the hospice mission. For 24 years and 1767 hours, Dick has been a cornerstone of our volunteer program. Prior to volunteering, he supported patients in his professional career, bringing a lifetime of experience and empathy to his role as a volunteer. He is always up to the task, no matter what, and consistently shows up with a smile. At the bedside, Dick provides companionship, spiritual support, and a calming presence to those who are dying—truly embodying the heart and meaning of hospice. Dick’s contributions extend beyond bedside care. He has served as a volunteer who helped run the weekly Eucharist service at Episcopal Homes and led a monthly healing service during the pandemic, offering comfort and hope during an especially challenging time. His presence is a blessing to anyone whose path he crosses. I have known Dick for many years in my hospice role. One moment that stands out is when I had changed geographical areas and was working with a family—who showed up to support this patient and family? Dick Guiton! He was there on his own time as a friend and advocate, demonstrating his deep commitment to people and relationships. Even after giving up driving, Dick did not give up his role as a volunteer. He continues to provide compassionate care at our residential home and arrives by Uber, ensuring that patients and families receive the support they need. His dedication knows no bounds. Beyond his personal acts of kindness, Dick’s knowledge and experience have been invaluable in shaping our hospice services. He has demonstrated leadership during organizational changes, including mergers with health systems, ensuring continuity of care and volunteer engagement during times of transition. He has also spearheaded initiatives to improve volunteer training and patient support, fostering a culture of excellence and compassion. In every interaction, Dick reflects the heart of hospice: compassion, dignity, and respect. His contributions have left lasting impressions on our organization and the community we serve.
